Dockmaster Newsletter 01/23/15

1/23/2015

Dear Coronado Cays Residents,

My name is Daniel Bick and I am pleased to announce that I am your new Dock Master and Code Compliance Manager. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with many Cays residents in the short time I have been part of your community. It has been a pleasure thus far and I hope to help the community in any way I can. With that said there are a few topics worth mentioning in this newsletter.

First, it is very important that boat owners dock their boat bow-in to the seawall. Backing boats in towards the seawall and applying forward thrust to stop the reverse motion disturbs the soil berms that help retain and stabilize the seawalls that border the Cays. This is an ongoing maintenance project for the C.C.H.O.A. and residents. If we all contribute our efforts to ensure minimal impact on the seawalls, we can extend the life of them and ensure their stability.

One of the many pleasures of living in San Diego is the weather. The winters are more than enjoyable and allow us to take advantage of the waterways year round. It is important that we respect the waterways and rules that apply to them. Please be sure to run your boat at a NO WAKE speed. This is usually associated with a 5 mph speed limit. If your boat creates a wake at 5 mph please slow down to a speed that lowers the impact of wakes. This time of year also brings stormy weather, it is important to remember to check your bilge pumps, float switches, batteries and chargers. If you are out of town please make arrangements to ensure that your boat is not holding or taking on water. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the C.C.H.O.A. office or myself directly.

Another common issue in the Cays is sinking Hydro Hoists. I have removed several sunken hoists and it is a pricy endeavor. Please maintain your Hydro Hoist to prevent it from sinking. The hoist is designed to protect your boat but if not maintained properly it can damage the boat and your dock.

Are you within your easement? It is important to have good harmony in our community. One of the contributing factors is how we dock our boats. Please be sure that your boat width and length are within the confined space of your easement. If you have any questions as to what your wharfage or easement is please contact me and I will be happy to show you the parcel map delineating this information.

We are constantly making improvements to the Cays and appreciate being notified of any issues that arise. I have been patrolling and maintaining the docks, navigation aids, seawalls, and waterways on a daily basis. If you are aware of any issues with your dock please contact me directly. We have recently resurfaced the dry storage yard located adjacent to the C.C.H.O.A. main office. It looks great and is a very convenient place for boat/trailer storage. Please contact the main office for availability. We also have several slips available in Jamaica Village. If you are thinking of purchasing a boat or already own one but don’t have a dock let us know, we would be happy to accommodate your needs. Please contact the C.C.H.O.A. main office for questions and details.

Sincerely,
Daniel Bick
