Dear Coronado Cays Homeowners and Residents,

Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with friends and family and are sticking with your New Year’s resolutions.

Volunteer Opportunities: Have you ever been interested in bringing your positive energy to support the Cays?  Maybe as a Village Director, or a Village Landscape Coordinator, or on a Committee like the AECC?  We will be hosting a meeting to talk about opportunities to be involved as an HOA Volunteer, January 29th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Interested? Please RSVP via email to assistantmanager@cchoa.org.
Recycling your Christmas Tree: There are two ways to recycle your Christmas Tree in Coronado.

1. Curbside – For the green waste curbside program, place four-foot sections of your tree in your yard waste recycling container.

2. Drop-off Program – The drop-off program is available from December 26, 2024, to January 14, 2025. Drop off your Christmas tree (no size restrictions) at one of the following two locations:
           A. Glorietta Bay boat launch parking lot
           B. Cays Park parking lot
Look for the large roll-off dumpsters. Please do not include any trash.

For more information about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle gift wrapping and holiday decorations, please visit EDCO’s website.

View the Christmas Tree Drop off Sites Map (PDF).  Additional information is on the City of Coronado’s Website.

Updated Website: We have launched the new Coronado Cays Homeowners Association website.  We are still populating the new site with information, but please give it a try and tell us what you think.

New State Laws on Parking Restrictions:  Under a new state law that aims to to save lives by boosting visibility, drivers will no longer be allowed to park within 20 feet of an intersection all across California starting Jan. 1 – although City of San Diego officials say they don’t plan to start issuing citations until March 1.

Between now and then, San Diego crews are removing meters near intersections, painting curbs red in those areas, posting “no parking” signs and trying to educate people about the new law, AB 413.  We are monitoring how the City or Coronado will be implementing these rule changes.

Boaters: Did you know that all motorized vessel operators need their Boater Card.  To apply for your California Boater Card, you will need to pay $10 and take an online boating safety course such as the free Boat U.S. Foundation Class for California (it will take a few hours).  You should get your card in less than a week and you can do the whole process from your computer!

Update from the City of Coronado: The December 27th City Manager’s Update talked about filling the City Council vacancy and recycling your Christmas Tree. The Spring 2025 Recreation Brochure is out.  Lots of good programs coming up this Spring.  And finally, the City Manager’s Update for January 10th discusses getting involved on a City Commission, how to proactively prepare for winter storm events, and has a link to a video about Coronado’s E-bike Rules of the Road.

Landscape Maintenance:  The season-to-date rain total at San Diego International Airport is 0.14”, which is 4% of normal.  Fortunately, we have had some very foggy nights, which have helped to keep things damp.  But the lack of rain is a real issue – for the state (the LA Fires are 2+ months after the normal fire season) and for the Cays (we need water to keep things green).

The landscape maintenance team has been catching up on winter trimming and weeding after completing turf renovations and winter fertilizing. Winterizing of daylilies, fortnight lilies, and grasses requires heavy trimming to promote new growth in the spring so don’t be alarmed. The team is also working to reduce/clean up Birds of Paradise throughout the community. The landscape enhancement team has been busy adding new plant material and mulch in Green Turtle Cay and Montego Villages, new plant material in Jamaica, Bahama, Antigua, Kingston, and Port Royale Villages and seasonal color at the Blue Anchor monument and CCHOA Kiosk and Admin Building. Landscape rock was added to the common area in front of the maintenance building, creating a very clean look.

We trimmed Common Area Deciduous trees the week of December 16. Port Royale is getting their deciduous trees trimmed the week of January 13. And Jamaica Village will have tree trimmers on site the week of January 27.  We also removed a few diseased palm trees from Kingston and Antigua Villages.

Maintenance Projects: Completed projects since my last newsletter include:

• Re-surfacing the Bahama Village / Antigua Village Pool is complete.   We are waiting for our final Pool Permit from the County of San Diego.
• Maintenance and repair work on Jamaica docks and dock boxes.  The southernmost section of the docks is done.
• Renovating/waterproofing landings in Antigua Village for Units 40/42 and 100/102 have been completed.
• Renovating/waterproofing balconies in Mardi Gras Village is complete.
• Antigua breezeway and upper landing lighting replacement is complete.
• Replaced furniture at the Trinidad/Kingston Village pool
• Holiday lights / decorations have been removed.

Code Enforcement Reminders:  A big thank you to Cay’s residents/tenants for their participation in keeping vehicles, boats & property in compliance.  The past couple of years have shown noticeable improvement.

Have you noticed spray paint marking on the street or sidewalk?  The local utility companies will occasionally mark their underground lines when getting ready to dig. Unfortunately, the local utilities do not consult with the City of Coronado or the Homeowners Association on what work they are planning.  You can find some additional information about what these colors mean here.
