Dear Coronado Cays Homeowners and Residents,

April is in full bloom, and the Cays is bursting with color! While the recent rain has given our flowers a gorgeous boost, it’s also kept our team busy tackling those ever-determined weeds. This month’s newsletter is packed with great updates on our community’s landscaping and maintenance efforts—enjoy the read, and have a fantastic spring!

Coronado Flower Show. The 103rd Annual Coronado Flower Show will be held in Spreckels Park on April 12th and 13th.  The theme this year is Cirque Des Fleurs.  Information on tickets and events can be found here.

Notes from the City Manager. The March 21st update from the Coronado City Manager included information about a free job fair on Thursday, April 10 in the Library Winn Room between 10 am and 2 pm.  This event will be hosted by Discover Coronado. The City is also accepting applications online for Day Camp Staff. You can apply by filling out on online application for Recreation Assistant here.  And, the Junior Lifeguard program is about to begin accepting applications, candidates will need to take a swim test to be able to register. And, of great interest to all of our younger bike (and e-bike) riders, the City is co-hosting three bicycle safety clinics with the Coronado Unified School District and the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition on May 7th, 13th, and 20th. Information available here.

36th Annual MotorCars on MainStreet! Coronado’s very own car show is a fun way to celebrate classic and custom automobiles.  May 4 from 10 am to 3 pm.  The cars will be parked along Isabella Avenue, Park Avenue, and Star Park Circle.

Grand Caribe Shoreline Park Erosion Stabilization Project. The latest and greatest rescheduled time is Tuesday, April 29 at 5 pm at the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. More information about this session can be found here.

Bee Alert! We have seen an uptick in the number of bees in the Cays. If you find yourself looking for a bee service, we recommend trying to find a bee keeper, not an exterminator. If we can re-home the bees, the earth will be a better place. A couple of recommendations:  The Bee Guys, and QueenB Live Bee Removal San Diego.

Landscape Maintenance Update
Overall, we are still behind in overall precipitation for the season, but we did get almost 3 inches of rain in March!  The front entrance is looking very colorful, and the hawthorn bushes and ground cover around the Cays are in bloom!

Tree Trimming Highlights:
• In mid- March, Greenleaf trimmed Common Area trees in Bahama Village.
• The following week, the team trimmed Jamaica deciduous trees in common area.
• More recently, they tackled Fan Palms and Queen Palms in Green Turtle.

Landscaping Updates: Springing into Action!

Our landscape team has been hard at work this month, bringing fresh blooms and much-needed TLC to our community’s green spaces! Over in Port Royale Village, we completed a stunning refresh near 42 Aruba Bend, adding iceberg roses, gazanias, geraniums, and decomposed granite. Bahama Village now boasts a vibrant entrance to the clubhouse parking area with bright yellow, orange, and purple lapranthus, and we’re testing a new approach to weed control. Meanwhile, Kingston Village saw the addition of two pink lady rhaphiolepis and a healthy new euryops bush, along with a major weeding and mulching effort.

Antigua got a bold new podocarpus and a bit of a facelift—lowering soil to protect the fence and buildings, while a hibiscus insect treatment stole the show. Trinidad’s towering bird of paradise got a much-needed trim, and Mardi Gras gained fractured rock under a stunning sago palm, along with a mix of colorful sweet peas, trailing gazanias, and blue daze. Jamaica Village saw a flurry of activity, including sprucing up pedestrian malls, refreshing common areas with gazanias and river rock, and tidying up trees and agave plants. Montego Village tackled post-windstorm debris while Blue Anchor and Green Turtle Cays brightened up their entrances with calendula, alyssum, silver leaf gazanias, and red fountain grasses. Green Turtle even had its irrigation system fine-tuned for better efficiency.

From colorful flower beds to strategic tree trims, our landscape crew has been making magic happen all month long! Keep an eye out for these updates as you stroll through the neighborhood, and as always, we appreciate your support in keeping our community looking its best!

Maintenance Team on the Move!
This month, our hardworking Maintenance Department tackled everything from leak repairs to large-scale renovations, keeping our community in top shape! Crews were busy fixing roof and balcony leaks, handling plumbing issues, and sprucing up fencing and concrete in Antigua, Kingston, Mardi Gras, and Montego Villages. Jamaica saw dock box repairs and fiberglass dock fixes, while Green Turtle replaced momument pillars.Trinidad focused on sound wall maintenance. Montego’s parking structure rebuild is progressing well, with Phases 1 and 2 now open. Plus, our team cleared gutters, sealed pool decks, and even freshened up clubhouse carpets in the Bahama / Antigua Clubhouse!

Ongoing projects include exterior painting at the Admin Complex and structural upgrades in Kingston. Meanwhile, fire safety line testing in Trinidad revealed a need for follow-up repairs, which are already completed. Emergency responses were swift, addressing various roof and window leaks in Kingston, as well as fixing a pesky roof leak at Calypso Café and the Admin men’s restroom. No matter the issue, our team was on it!

Looking ahead, upcoming projects include Antigua landing and balcony repairs, Jamaica sidewalk repairs, Bahama ground light replacements, and replacing the Maintenance Yard’s vehicle gate. With so much progress, it’s clear our maintenance crew is keeping our community safe, sound, and looking sharp. A huge thank you to the team for their dedication and hard work!

Code Enforcement Reminders:

Why do we ask boat owners to dock their boats ‘bow in’? It’s all about protecting our seawalls! While some are maintained by the City of Coronado, most belong to homeowners and will eventually require replacement. The design of our seawall includes a sand berm to keep them in place. However, propeller turbulence can disturb this protective berm, reducing the stability of the seawall. By simply docking ‘bow in,’ boaters can help preserve these critical structures and keep our waterfront community strong for years to come!
