California Surf Lifesaving Championships

7/25/2018

Largest Ocean Lifeguard Competition on the West Coast to be held at Silver Strand State Beach on Friday, July 27 and Saturday July 28, 2018.

Lifeguards from nearly 30 agencies will bring their quickest and toughest to compete and earn bragging rights to be crowned California’s Best Lifeguards.

(Coronado, CA) The best athletes in ocean sports from along the West Coast, as well as Hawaii and Australia will compete, and provide impressive displays of physical prow- ess, athleticism and competitiveness — while demonstrating lifesaving skills in each event.

The two-day competition, sanctioned by the California Surf Lifesaving Assn. (CSLSA), is the largest annual ocean lifeguard competition in California. It will feature Junior Life- guards, as young as 9-years old, and professional lifeguards. The competitors will be vying for a berth in the United States Lifesaving Assn. National Championships to be held in Virginia Beach, VA on August 8-11, 2018.

“Fitness and endurance are required skills for ocean lifeguards,” said Bill Humphreys, president of the CSLSA. “The CSLSA Regional Lifesaving Championships is a unique event which showcases - in a competitive environment - the lifesaving techniques used daily by these lifeguards.”

The action will start both days at 8 am. On Friday, July 27, over 800 Junior Lifeguards (Ages 9-17) will compete at Silver Strand Beach. On Saturday, July 28, more than 250 professional lifeguards will compete in tests of speed and endurance, such as sprint paddleboard races, rescue race, ocean swims, beach flags, and the always exciting surf boat (dory) event.

The competition will be hosted by three south San Diego Lifeguard Associations: Impe- rial Beach (IBLA), Silver Strand (SSLA) and Coronado Beach (CBLA).

The public is invited to watch the action both days. Traffic and parking will be impacted by this event. It is anticipated the parking lots at Silver Strand State Beach will be at ca- pacity by late morning each day and backups may occur on CA 75 North and South.
